Privacy and relaxed elegance on Philadelphia’s Main Line.
Convenient to PHL/NJ/NYC. Low taxes.

Originally part of Ardrossan, a legendary 750-acre estate, Albermarle is a 17-acre retreat just 30 minutes from Philadelphia and its international airport and 90 minutes from New York City. Offering surprisingly low property taxes, this collection of masterfully restored and expanded, English-style stone buildings is set behind a gated entry and feels like your own 21st-century village:

  • A main residence

  • Guest house

  • Entertainment barn

  • Pool and tennis court

  • Clock tower building now used by the owner as a small, well-outfitted headquarters for his business interests.

Every piece of the estate has been fine-tuned for today’s lifestyles and is complemented by picturesque hardscaping and landscaping and vista views of conservancy land. Importantly, this hidden world, located in one of the wealthiest ZIP codes in the United States, is a tremendous value compared to properties in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York and Washington, D.C., areas and also features low property taxes.

After meticulous renovations supervised by world-class artisans and architects, Albermarle is through-and-through a breathtaking property that effortlessly exceeds the most discriminating requirements for living and entertaining with a degree of aesthetic refinement unparalleled on the Eastern Seaboard.

Architect Lyman Perry and builder Joe Ottaviano of Pinemar Bulding Company, working with designer Linda Steinke, have personally fostered the evolution of Albermarle. Exquisite designs and architectural details of the highest order are seen all throughout the estate. Its natural landscape is complemented by handcrafted terraces, landscape features and horticultural designs by Chuck Gale. In all, Albermarle’s transformation into a world-class residence represents nearly three years of uninterrupted collaboration.

A visit to Albermarle Estate is essential to comprehend its uncompromising artistic vision. It is an epochal masterpiece, embracing a fusion of modernity and matchless historical pedigree.

The Estate Grounds

Albermarle’s grounds—designed by Chuck Gale—complement the historic countryside surrounding the property while enhancing the immaculately restored estate buildings and outdoor living areas.

Gardens, terraces, and paths have been designed to provide unparalleled views from every window of each building. The lush landscaping offers comprehensive privacy, while comfortably connecting the estate’s discreet living environs with the broader natural features beyond the property’s borders.

A sterling collection of outbuildings enhances the substantial Main Residence -- the Clock Tower (see above), the Guest Quarters and the Stone Barn.

Clock Tower

This charming building, bursting with historical character, blends original architectural features, materials, and details with the beautifully restored clock in unique and unforgettable fashion. The result is a one-of-a-kind structure that exudes bygone aesthetics while offering entirely modern functionality and amenities.

The tower’s stone walls have been completely re-pointed; the original windows have been restored in order to preserve the vintage glass; custom storm windows have been specially fitted. The tower, along with its masterfully crafted addition, provides:

  • A Greeting Room/Reception Area

  • 5 “Class A” Offices & Conference Room

  • Octagonal Clock Room/Board Room

  • A Kitchen

  • Two Full Baths

  • Attached, Oversized Four-Car Garage

Guest Quarters

The Guest Quarters were built as part of the original southern section of Ardrossan Farm. They served as living quarters for estate staff, and were in close proximity to the horse barn. The building is immaculately renovated.

As currently configured, the quarters are two side-by-side residences; one guest house offers one (1) Master Bedroom Suite, and its twin offers three (3) Guest Bedroom suites. Each suite features a large bedroom, dressing room and full bathroom.

Each guesthouse also offers an exquisite great room, spacious kitchens, dining spaces, and more.

The residences may be connected easily to form one grand guest house, offering one large master suite and three spacious guest suites.

The Stone Barn

Albermarle's fabulous, all-stone Barn was completely rebuilt in the identical location to the original barn, and was designed to complement the older structures on the property. Includes one (1) full bathroom and one (1) powder room.

Great attention was lavished on the stonework of the Barn, as well as to its old-style architectural features and all materials and finishes.

Exterior features include:

  • Solid stone and siding construction

  • Cedar shake roof with cupola detail

  • Copper flashings, gutters and downspouts

  • Sloped flagstone entrance and sliding barn doors on cast iron hinges, opening to hand-carved Moroccan entry doors

The Main Residence

Once the Ardrossan Estate’s stone stables, Albermarle’s main residence is the focal point of four stunning structures on the property.

Completely renovated and move-in-ready, the main residence is beautifully detailed with distinctive interior design elements incorporating original architectural features—handcrafted wooden floors, paneled walls, high, coffered ceilings, large windows, period hardware and more.

Inside the main house, the expansive floor plan showcases generously proportioned living, dining and great rooms and one of the best chef’s kitchens on the Main Line. Plentiful windows and French doors embrace the exceptional setting and allow for indoor-outdoor flow. Fireplaces stand ready for winter evenings. Formal living and dining rooms are comfortably sized for entertaining. The expansive kitchen readily meets the demands of the largest events in both its design and array of pro-grade appliances, but its casual, fireside dining area no doubt will be a favorite for everyday. A grand-scale great room, lodge-like in its feel, offers a soaring fireplace, wet bar, and access to a custom-designed wine cellar. The views from the extensive patios and other outdoor spaces feel endless. Closing out the main floor is a paneled study, designed to be a quiet retreat, and an en suite bedroom.

A Treasure Without Peer

As part of Ardrossan, arguably the Main Line’s most famous country estate, Albermarle carries a fascinating, unforgettable history—both epitomizing and surpassing
the essence of the Main Line’s Golden Age.

the history of albermarle

In 1902, Colonel Robert Leaming Montgomery, founder of the investment firm Janney Montgomery Scott, purchased contiguous land parcels totaling 800 acres on the Main Line and named his estate “Ardrossan”, after the Montgomery family’s ancestral home in Ayrshire, Scotland. Three decades later, the magnificent stables and outbuildings which were to comprise the core of Albermarle Estate were erected at Ardrossan.

The Montgomery family was renowned for equestrian skill and show, and Albermarle was the center of their sporting pursuits. Colonel Montgomery’s daughter, Hope Montgomery Scott, was the most celebrated horsewoman of the family—in fact, she was the Chairman of the Devon Horse Show for many years—but she was eminently more than that.

The ‘Philadelphia Story’ Begins

Ms. Montgomery Scott was the greatest personage of Philadelphia society. Dubbed ‘the unofficial queen’ of the Main Line by Vanity Fair magazine, she was the inspiration for the irrepressible Tracy Lord—the mercurial heiress in the film The Philadelphia Story, played to the hilt by Katharine Hepburn.

But Hepburn wasn’t the only star of The Philadelphia Story (nor were Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart); Albermarle was featured prominently. Hollywood lore has it that when MGM executives visited Ardrossan prior to filming, they were so overwhelmed by the estate’s scale and elegance that they deemed it “unbelievable” to the American audience. Thus, the stable sets—inspired by Albermarle—were scaled down to appear similar to smaller quarters in nearby Merion. Ms. Montgomery Scott enjoyed decades of distinguished residence at Ardrossan, modernizing the stables and outbuildings during her residency. Her hegemony over the estate then passed to her son, the beloved philanthropist, Robert Montgomery Scott.

Robert Scott was famously devoted to Ardrossan and for several decades blended his advocacy for Philadelphia’s cultural enrichment with his passion for the family seat in the Main Line. Mr. Scott pursued an unswerving course of cultural preservation and investment, most prominently as the longtime president of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In parallel, he effected extensive improvements and modernizations to Ardrossan over the course of his stewardship.

When Robert Scott passed away in late 2005, many prominent voices in the community felt that an epoch of Philadelphia history had passed with him—one characterized by gentility, grace, quiet patronage and deep respect for aesthetic standards.
